WASHINGTON, 23 Nov — Tatiana Kalmykova, Mikhail Turgiev. The U.S. hopes to strengthen the UN’s role in resolving the Syrian crisis, if the constitutional Committee will not be formed, said in an interview with the newspaper “Kommersant”, the special representative of the Secretary of state on Syria, James Jeffrey.
“If we’re going to suffer a huge disappointment and the constitutional Committee will not be formed, then I think the UN — and I was just at a meeting of the Security Council on Monday, we met with the Secretary-General Guterres, however, he will explain his position, — then, of course, the United States and, we believe, many of those countries, whose position is close to ours, will be expected from the UN entirely different and much more Central role in resolving this crisis, if the attempts of Mr. de Mistura to work with Russia, Iran, Turkey and to some extent with the Syrian government will be unsuccessful,” he said.
The UN special envoy on Syria Staffan de Mistura said earlier that for personal reasons, will leave the post at the end of November after four years of working as a special envoy on Syria. His successor will be the Norwegian Ambassador Geir Pedersen.
