The special representative of the Secretary of state on Syria, James Jeffrey
USA 20 November imposed sanctions against Iran and Russia over oil supplies to the Syrian authorities. The special representative of the Secretary of state on Syria, James Jeffrey in an interview with the newspaper “Kommersant” was told what the Washington wants taken measures, which the us administration is expecting from cooperation with Russia on Syria and the new UN special envoy, and US ready to participate in the negotiations in Astana format.
— This week the U.S. made a statement on new sanctions against Iran and Russia over oil supplies to Syria and issued a warning about the existence of a significant risk of sanctions against those who engage in such activities in the future. What are the criteria for imposing new sanctions in the future, and do you believe that the sanctions revived the political process?
— In answer to your last question, I would like to say that, Yes, we hope so, that’s one of the reasons for which we do it. Of course, all imposed on Iran sanctions is a separate component of pressure on this country, due to our extreme concern about the actions of Iran in the region. But these sanctions are also aimed at assistance to Iran Syria. And we believe that the political process went forward, came to the de-escalation of the armed conflict in Syria. It’s a terrible conflict, it involved many third-party powers, including Russia and the United States. Killed half a million people. And we will resort to sanctions, refuse to help to restore, to use diplomatic tools — to do everything in our power to try to end the conflict and return Syria to its people.
